Foreign News; Paphos attempts to stamp out Peddlers

paphos
There are concerns in Paphos that peddling is getting out of hand with one municipal councilor saying that the local authorities and members of the public have a responsibility to help younger hawkers break the habit.
Following an increase in peddling incidents in Paphos, involving unlicensed street vendors walking up to cars at traffic stops or approaching customers outside shops and restaurants, Municipal councilor Yiorgos Tsielepos filed a complaint with the city.

Despite many locals contacting police to report peddling, which is unlawful, the number of incidents has been going up with Tsielepos, a member of ruling Disy party, turning to the town’s mayor Fedonas Fedonos to raise the issue.

According to media reports, police told Tsielepos that municipal traffic wardens can handle these claims and give out fines to offenders.

But the problem has taken an additional dimension recently, as younger peddlers are often spotted in the streets of the town plying their trade.

“When it comes to young peddlers, municipal traffic wardens should be given instructions so that they can notify police and the social welfare office, so that we can put a stop to the abuse of minors,” Tsielepos said.

But officials say young peddlers never report anything against their guardians and often present themselves as aged 16 and above, meaning they are not required to be in school.

Peddling in Cyprus has been a main issue recently in all major cities of Cyprus, with shoppers and often complaining that hawkers, believed to be foreign nationals, approach them trying to sell products, which are often fake.
